2025 Bill Hayner Polar Plunge
$1,559.00 Raised • 30 Donors
Bill Hayner Rotary Club President
Bill has been raising money for Polio since he joined Rotary in 2013. When the Rotary district event was cancelled due to COVID in 2020 Bill led the club to create the Polar Plunge held annually at St. Camillus parking lot. During these years Arlington Police and Arlington Fire Departments cooperated to provide a safe environment for the Polar Plunge. This year both departments are fielding teams to outraise Bill in his efforts fund the elimination of polio.
2025 Kenji Numata
$390.00 Raised • 7 DonorsJapanese Research Scientist at Brigham and Women's Challenges Rotary President Bill Hayner, Arlington Police and Fire Departments Plunge Teams!
Arlington Rotary’s Polar Plunge to raise funds to eradicate polio has taken on an international dimension. Kenji Numata, M.D, is an Assistant Professor of the Department of Emergency and Critical Medicine at St. Marianna University School of Medicine in Kawasaki, Japan, about 18 miles southwest of center Tokyo. He is currently conducting research at Brigham and Women's Hospital here in Boston. As a professional in emergency medicine, Kenji developed an interest in improving appropriate end-of-life care to patients at the end stage of life. Kenji has now entered the competition against Arlington’s Fire and Police Department teams, and Rotary President Bill Hayner.
In the U.S, end-of-life care training courses designed to improve the Quality-of-Life of terminal patients have been developed. Kenji believes that introducing such courses in Japan, where the aging population is rapidly increasing, is crucial. He is currently working through his research to bring this course to Japan. What he plans to accomplish through his research is to enable emergency healthcare providers to deliver necessary and appropriate end-of-life care to terminal patients brought to emergency department throughout the country.
Kenji, a Rotarian in the Kawasaki Miyamae Rotary Club of the Yokohama-Kawasaki District (D2590) (there are 84,000 Rotarians in Japan) is a candidate for a Global Rotary Scholarship (Disease Prevention and Treatment). While here in the US he is an honorary member of the Rotary Club of Arlington and regularly attends meetings.
